Create an effective group structure
By creating a well-thought-out group structure, you give your company the best chance to display as much temperature as possible in Winningtemp. A main principle when it comes to setting up the group structure is to organise the groups according to how you want to display the temperature in Winningtemp. For example, gather all employees who report to the same manager or create a group with all employees who work with similar tasks.
Group structure in Winningtemp is usually divided into two different types, traditional and function-based group structures.
Traditional group structure
In a traditional group structure, the structure is built up according to a geographical location, which is followed by the various departments in that location. See picture below.
With the traditional structure, you can see the temperature for the different departments in each city. However, in this example, you can't see the temperature for all salespeople as they work in different cities. This is where segments come into play. By creating a segment with the two sales departments, you can easily see the temperature of all salespersons.

Group structure with a focus on function
In this type of group structure, the structure is built up according to function instead of geographical location. In the subgroups, the employees can be spread out in different locations but consist of employees who work with the same type of tasks within the company. See picture below.
With this group structure, you can see the temperature for the different roles, but you cannot see the temperature based on the two countries. By creating a segment for each country, you get access to country-specific temperatures.

What exactly is a segment?
With the help of segments, you can collect data from specific groups/roles without affecting the actual organizational structure. For example, measure the temperature of a specific country or a specific role within the company.
Note that segments only display temperature and not comments or insights. Segments are only visible to System administrators and Managers.
Which group structure suits us best?
You must create a group structure based on how you are structured in the company. If you work according to location or geographic location, the traditional structure will suit you best. If you work according to function or different business areas, go for a function-based group structure.
Where should I place the managers in the group structure?
The manager is set up as a manager for one group and a user in another group since they are usually responsible for their department/team/group, but at the same time, report to their manager. A manager cannot be a user and a manager in the same group.
Where you place the managers depends on how many managers there are. If there are enough managers to reach the anonymity threshold, all managers can be placed in a management group. Place the management group where you want to see their temperature, for example, next to the employee group so that the manager's manager can see the temperature for the entire department including the employees. Alternatively, put the management group directly below the total temperature.
However, if there are only a few managers, you can place them in the group above the employees, as long as there are more than two subgroups in the group.
If a manager does not belong to a group or segment (and is not excluded from surveys), he/she contributes to the temperature at the highest group in the organizational hierarchy.
Build the structure in the Excel file
When you fill in the import file, the group structure must be created correctly. To, e.g. create the group "Sweden" as a subgroup of "Sales", fill in "Sales/Sweden" in the "group" column. Since the company itself, in this case, "Company X" has already been created by us at Winningtemp, you do not need to include the company name before "Sales".
Pro-tip
- The most important thing is to build a good group structure, then you can add segments based on what you find interesting to measure.
- With an anonymity level set to five users, there must be at least five people in each group to be able to display the temperature. By building the group structure with slightly larger groups than the anonymity level itself you provide the group with a buffer to show results even if not everyone responds to the survey. In this example, it would be beneficial to have 8 users in each group to provide that buffer.
