Understand the SMART index

The SMART index gives managers an early indication of risk, whether that's staff turnover or sickness absence, based on research into how employees feel about their workplace.

Winningtemp measures temperature across nine research-validated question categories. Based on research from the University of Gothenburg, these are divided into distal and proximal factors. The proximal factors are the ones that matter most here, as they directly influence whether employees want to stay or leave.

A low SMART index score means the organisation may be at risk of losing employees. A high score is a positive signal that employees are happy and not considering leaving.

Turnover

The proximal factors for turnover are measured across these categories:

  • Participation
  • Team spirit
  • Commitment
  • Job satisfaction

Sickness & absence

The proximal factors for sickness and absence are measured across these categories:

  • Job satisfaction
  • Participation
  • Work situation
  • Autonomy
  • Team spirit

At least half of the categories need to include one or more questions for the SMART index to show data.
